Here is why I gave Storm Born five stars: I like urban fantasy books, especially ones that contain Fae (or Gentry) characters that are aimed for ADULT audiences and not YA. I like female heroines that can kick ass and take names who have untapped potential to become more powerful which can result in a duality between being the good guy or turning bad. I like villains who are dark and charming, who may later become allies with the heroine, but always keep you guessing on whose side they are really on. I like love triangles. I like action scenes that pick the pace up so the flow of the story isn't stagnant. I like hot sex scenes, as long as it's relevant to the story and not just thrown in (which Storm Born does a very good job by using it to introduce character motives and "plot twist"). Storm Born checks off everything on my list that I love, it has humor, cohesiveness and style all wrapped up in a sizzling urban fantasy world. This is not a YA novel (there is super hot sex), it's not for readers who like innocent, sweet heroines (Eugenie is a hard core killer, not afraid of her sexuality, and although she has principals she follows, those lines will become obscure through plot reveals which contributes to her character duality and internal conflict throughout the story). It's dark (there is a rape theme throughout the book, so that may be a trigger for some readers, although Eugenie's strength and ability to fight back her attackers is extremely cathartic for me). I hope this review helps future readers in deciding whether or not this series is right for them because there are definitely elements that can be turn offs for some, but delightfully delicious to others (myself included). Cheers.

Storm Born Dark Swan Book 1 Richelle Mead 9781420100969 Books Reviews

Before buying Storm Born, I read some reviews referring to the end of the series. If you don't want to know, stop reading now.

The final book in this series made a lot of loyal fans very upset, and now that I'm half through Storm Born, I can see why. SORT OF SPOILER The last installment of this series, from all accounts, completely and utterly betrays the characters and the world it portrays.

What makes me sad is that Richelle Mead is a good author and I've liked her Succubus books. Having read half of this book and enjoyed it, I can tell that the end would seriously disappoint me, as well, so I don't want to get invested in the characters or the storyline. The end doesn't sound as bad as how Charlaine Harris chose to end the Sookie Stackhouse books, but painful and unsatisfying nonetheless.

It's too bad, because I like the premise and storyline, but as I said, just can't let myself get involved in a series that's just going to end badly, in a petty and pretty cruel way.

Bummer.
Even though it took me a while to read this book, with other books coming out and all the trips I've been going on, it was amazing.

I am a HUGE Vampire Academy fan, so when I went to Borders to get a few new books I wanted to read Richelle Mead's Succubus Blues series. Unfortunately, they were out of stock of the first installment, so I went with the Dark Swan series instead!

I felt so much of a connection with so many of the characters. It was so hard not to feel for them. The story was great, and the whole book left me wanting more and more! Also, not to be on the perverted side, but this book for sure gave J.R. Ward's sex scene a run for their money!

The only "downside" I would say is the fact I really like Dorian more than Kiyo! Maybe I'm crazy, I don't know! But the last chapter made me want them together even more! I mean, I know she just went through hell (literally) for Kiyo. But I just think Dorian is so sweet and nice and isn't havin' a baby by anyone that we know of! P

Overall, this book was great! I can't want to read the second installment, fast!
“If I offer you hospitality, you must reciprocate in kind. I’ll see that no one harms you in my household, but in return, you can harm no one under my roof.” I glanced back at Volusian. “You didn’t mention that.”
- uhm... I’m sorry what? She expected to be able to kill whoever she wanted in someone’s home while being protected by that someone? I’m embarrassed to say I kept reading after this but I hoped things would perk up. They did not.

This is just one example of how unfortunately ignorant this main character is. She is strong, and powerful but beyond annoying. Every other page rape is talked about, and while the book says how terrible a fate of rape would be it’s so casually and consistently thrown in that I found myself rolling my eyes, the fear never felt real because it was so constantly referred to in off handed comments. The “new adult” content, i.e., the sex was written in the same less than intricate maturity as the rest of the novel. And the violence or fighting was just as lackluster.

Character building was nonexistent, and the world building didn’t really begin until the last 50 pages or so, and by then I didn’t even care. I didn’t care about any of the characters and was not at all surprised by any of the “twists” in this novel. The love triangle was uncomfortable and the plot, while seemingly interesting from the books synopsis was boring and far too predictable.

Mostly it’s the writing style, the dialogue was not enticing or believable and over all just very undeveloped, I was aware the whole time that I was reading and never got sucked in. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone and will be hard pressed to try another book by this author.
You know, the heroine who doesn't really know that she's a super-powered paranormal. The two hot, sexy men who are panting to get her into bed. The mystery of "will she accept her powers or not?" which of course, isn't really a mystery because circumstances (handy plot bunny here) force her to figure out how to use them to (of course) protect those she loves. As usual, she can't cook and her bedroom is a mess, but her handy roomie can whip up gourmet meals on order, any time of day.

It's derivative, and hits all the cliches.
