I read almost any fiction and non fiction about the 8-10th century. Too often the fiction turns out to be romance with a bit of accurate history. This book fails both as a romance and as history. At best it's fantasy set in the 8th century. No resemblance to Charles the Greatwas found. The first chapter says he was a mommy's boy and the younger son. No evidence of the former and the latter is untrue.

Save your money. If you want an early medieval romance try Judith Tarr. If you want history I suggest non fiction by Janet Nelson or R. McKitterick

If you like your history hot and gold don't dare read this book or you will never read again. I found my self a mere paragraph in already wanting to be as far away from it as possible. This writing style is purely boring and inactive. I had to give it a minimum of one star because my response was not accepted with a zero.
The style was not to my liking.
