This has the mystery like the Columbo television series. You know who did it but how will it all come out.It lets the reader inside Marnie's thought processes and some of her motivations. It is far more complex than the film. She really fights learning about herself and getting the help she desperately needs while living in denial about the inevitable. I found a lot of her thought patterns were very close to those of serial criminals.
The flow and connections are much clearer in the book than the film. I found Mark's character more likable and sympathetic than the film and more plausible. The film employed some awkward and superfluous transitions to explain Marnie's motivations that were more plausible in the book.
Without giving away the ending, it was unexpected.

I chose to give this book a five star rating because of the author. No matter what I read of Winston Graham he gets me off balance and surprises me with a large twist of his plot. This book was no exception. The ending was a jolt, but a satisfying one.
I didn’t realize Sir Winston Graham, author of the “Poldark” book series, wrote “Marnie.” I’ve seen the movie several times, and wanted to read the book. It was a very enjoyable read, and goes into much more detail and is much darker and less sanitized than the movie. Well done, Sir! Highly recommend.
I anticipated the novel being quaint and was not disappointed by references to late Fifties fads. I anticipated what both Hitchcock and the recent Met opera changed and preserved. I expected the story to be shallow, which is the bedrock of melodrama. What I did not anticipate was some of the sheer boredom of the story.
It was very interesting to compare this to the Hitchcock movie. I was surprised it was in first person -- Marnie in the film is so enigmatic and reserved. Some plot points are different, the setting is England rather than America and the ambiguous ending is much darker than the film but it was a satisfying and enjoyable read.
The plot was steady and thoughtful, and yet I was taken by surprise again and again. Of course you can discern the background - but not completely! You can guess - but still be surprised! Toward the end, the reader is faced with four or five possible endings and is kept unsure of which would be best, which is most likely, and which would I choose? Finally, the author chooses the perfect, the only perfect ending! a master storyteller!
I have seen the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, but had never read the book. It has been my experience that books are generally better than he movies made from them, and once again this has proven to be the case. This books is suspenseful enough to keep one awake at night and I thought I could see where it was headed, but the ending was very unexpected. It is a great read and will keep you on your toes to the very end.
This is not the book version of the Hitchcock movie starring Tippi Hedren and pre-James Bond Sean Connery. It is however a very well-written book about a woman suffering from PTSD. Back then, if someone had a violent childhood, they kept quiet about it. Thus, turning Marnie into a pathological liar and thief who has no interest in sex. Without giving away the plot, this book delves into the psychology of Marnie and even her husband Mark. At times, it does show its age. The book was written 60 years ago and some parts do not hold up. But, it does hold the reader's interest and you can't help but like Marnie and even respect her, considering the life she's had. If you enjoy stories that focus on the unpredictability of life and the reasons why people make the choices they do, then this book is for you.
